Artist Statement

The main focus of my works will primarily be portrait photography. But also I want to be able to make a story or give off a feeling through them. Also for my focus, I would like to show the deeper emotions of those trapped in desperate times. I want to be able to emotionally move an audience through my photos and show how there are always those in need and in desperate times. My theme would be to give a certain feeling through my photos be it solitude or any other emotion, also that their be a hidden story in my photos. One struggle that I may come across is that I really do not have a lot of free time between school and swimming to give to my photography. But, when I do work on my photos, I will give it my all. My audience would be you, my classmates, and any other person that would like to view my photography. One influence of mine is Julien Mauve. Although he does not do portrait photography, he is an excellent example for expressing a mood or feeling in a photograph. He is able to create such a strong feeling of isolationism in his photos (Greetings from Mars) and I would like to mimic that. Another influence of mine is Walter Iooss. I love his portrait photography because he is able to express how much each athlete he shoots really loves the sport that they play. Dorothea Lange is another photographer I would love to mimic because of her to tell a story through her photos. Her works of victims of the great depression is absolutely astounding because of how well she is able to express the loss of hope in her models. Yousuf Karsh is also a photographer I would like to mimic because of his unique style of theatrical lighting. Karsh is also known to be one of the greatest portrait photographers of the 20th Century. Finally, I may want to flirt with the many unique poses, bold color configurations, and intriguing props that Annie Leibovitz used. Also, I would like to partake in still life photography like Timothy Hogan. One other field of photography I would like to use is light painting like Janne Parviainen.

The Process and Equipment USed

Mimic #3.jpg

For my portrait photography, I would mostly use a tripod with a longer exposure time, so I would be able to play with different types of light.

For my abstract photography, I would go free hand, and walk around and capture photos of items or objects that I found Interesting. My exposure varied based on how the natural light was and what I was shooting.

For my other works, the method of my shooting varied based on what I was capturing. For example, I took two separate photos in different stances and layered the two on top of one another (one with a lower opacity). But for the light painting, I used a tripod with a very long exposure because of the lighting and a flashlight so I could do the light painting.
